Starting Under Saddle
Clinton Anderson is known the world over for his colt starting techniques. In this series, you’ll learn the dynamic method Clinton used to beat the country’s best horsemen – hands down – to become the first person to win the prestigious Road To The Horse Colt Starting Championship two years in a row. Within just three hours, Clinton was able to gentle a wild horse and stand on his back while firing a gun and cracking a whip. Thousands have watched his colt starting demos at tours and remained transfixed as he takes a barely touched two year old and transforms him into a quiet, willing partner. Nobody in the world gets a horse better broke or more supple than Clinton and this eleven hour series is your ringside guide to learning his famed method.
This series covers every aspect of colt starting from the first touch to the fifteenth ride and offers countless success tips, safety precautions and troubleshooting advice. Clinton’s emphasis on safety, respect and suppleness is the perfect guide for anyone who has ever worked with green horses or wanted to.
Clinton’s focus on safety for both the horse and rider make his Method the easy and smart choice for building a lifelong partnership. With the experience of starting over 600 wild brumbies straight from the Australian Outback, there isn’t a colt starting situation Clinton hasn’t found himself in and doesn’t know the solution to. Among the many valuable lessons in the series, you’ll learn:
• The Jeffries Method – a time-tested gentling technique that Clinton learned in Australia
• How to halter your colt for the first time
• The simple steps you can take to make the first saddling stress-free
• Introducing the snaffle bit and ensuring the colt never resists the bridle
• Detailed groundwork and riding exercises
The series features Clinton working with a wild mustang that has never before been touched by humans. He will take you step-by-step through his acclaimed method from the very first touch to progressing the colt’s training under saddle. Clinton specifically chose to work with a wild mustang in the series to give you the full effect of his training method. With the wild mustang, he details the importance of establishing trust and asserting yourself as the leader in your relationship. You’ll see firsthand why his step-by-step program builds the foundation your colt will need for a successful career whether your goals be national level competitions or backyard companionship.
“Colt starting can be a tremendously rewarding experience. I personally love working with colts. But starting a colt is very humbling because no matter how prepared you think you are the unexpected can happen. With the help of my colt starting series, you’ll learn how to stay safe and properly react in any situation. | This is a very practical, informative, no bull, from start to finish DVD set.
After whatching the first DVD, I was having a problem getting one of our old mares out of the field. she has show jumped , pony clubed etc but is very stand offish.I got the other mares out then closed the gate and used the basics of the round pen tecniques of circles and change of direction including moving her faster when she went to the gate.I could have caught her at the gate, but wanted her to catch me. After 2hrs she made the first attempt to come to me and i retreated, she followed, i retreated she followed then wondereded off, 5 mins later , i retreated she followed ,i retreated she followed and touched me and allowed the halter to be fitted, the first time this has happened in her 21 years of age!!! Excellent DVD, what more can i say......... |
Excellent Series - Things are clicking

| I am a recent convert to Clinton Andersons methods. I won this DVD series at his Walkabout Tour. I've been using the techniques for only a week on both of my horses and have seen immediate improvement. My horse is green broke and I noticed gaps in her training that I had missed. By watching the DVDs and practicing what Clinton has done with the mustang. My mare is starting to get more responsive from the ground and has started using more brain than brawn. Some of it is starting to translate under saddle. It's an excellent series for the unbroke horse or for a horse that has noticeable gaps. I would highly recommend it! |
Our Colt
|
| by Elwood from Boerne, TX |
| After watching Clinton Anderson on RFDTV for several months I decided that I wanted to buy a young colt and train him myself. I had been around horses plenty and ridden some, however I never owned one myself. We bought our 3-yr old colt who had only been haltered on December 26, 2008. I followed this DVD with sessions in the evenings after my full time job. In two months we had him trail ready and received compliments from several people on how good he is.
We just bought a filly in April and we have already started her on the same program.
I have never trained a horse until now. If you follow every step of his program and you are not afraid to push yourself a little, then the rewards are really difficult to put into words. Before you spend 1,000 on a trainer, spend 170 and learn it all yourself.

| After following Clintons methods on our domestic horses with great sucess we decided to take on the challenge of starting a BLM Mustang. We couldn't have choosen a better DVD to start with. This series is packed full of all the info we needed to start our Mustang, and put that ever so important solid foundation on him. We had such a great success with this series we decided to train another BLM Mustang. By starting with this series and continuing to follow Clintons training program step by step, putting in the time, effort and energy, we have very safe, willing and respectful horses that our 3 grandgirls can ride and enjoy as much as we do! |
Best Investment I Made
|
| by Theresa from Whitefish, Montana |
| This DVD was one of the best investments I have made for training my horse. I had bought a yearling because I wanted a horse that was mine, trained and broke by me and not ridden by different people. I have seen them get disrespectful cause some people want to ride and dont know what they are doing at all. When it came time to train her, I ran into frustration when using another trainers product. I could not get the response I needed. I didnt see the follow through on thier material that I needed to correct issues when they arose and what to do. A friend told me about Clinton and I looked him up on the internet and found he was coming to Kalispell. I bought tickets went to a walkabout tour and sat glued the whole time to what he was doing. I Purchased the DVD and started with my horse. She needs lots of riding right now, but with Clintons technique, I took her from being a back yard pet to a responsive partner. She is not spooky but curious now. I have even slapped the ground 3 inches from feet with my handystick all the way around and she is so calm. She almost dozes off at times. We have completed 95% of the training on this DVD. When we left the round pen and pasture for our first ride, it was almost like she had been ridden forever. She responded to all my commands and did not give me any issues. I use the training hackamore on her sold by Clinton. All the techniques led up to a very responsive horse on the first ride out. Like I said, this is the best investment I have ever made. Now, when spring arises and I get my mares worked out, I am going to teach these basic steps to my 6 year old granddaughter. We will be out doing groundwork together. I also used it on my 10 year old mare and she went from being pushy to respectful immediately. Thank you so much Clinton for being willing to put yourself out there so we can be better horseman and partners with our horses. I plan on purchasing more training DVDs in the future when me and my horses are ready for the next level. Plus I am getting the kids kit for my granddaughter in a couple months when the snow melts. I hope to help her become an excellent horsewoman from the start. |
Colt Starting

| I had watched Clinton on TV years ago and had used his "Lunging for Respect"to "fix" an extremely disrespectful QH filly I had at the time. Recently, I bought a Freisian cross mare who at 5 years old had no handling. I did not want to send her off to a trainer and worry about how she would be handled; I wanted her to be trained Clintons way. Being no trainer by any means myself, and not knowing how to go about breaking a horse, I invested in the Colt Starting DVD and decided to see if I could do it. I figured I would go as far as I could. The DVD was so detailed and full of information, I had lots of work to do, but good instruction on how to do it. It is like a series of games you teach and play with your horse, but each one has a purpose. Well, we just finished DVD 2 and she is every bit as respectfull, attentive and gentile as the horse on the disk. I can move any part of her body like a showmanship horse with little to no noticable ques. I can jump up on her back just like Clinton and she stands calmly although at 17 hands I can not hop up from the ground, and neede to incorporate a mounting block I feel so proud that I can do this myself and my horse and I are bonding as well through this work.
By the way, my first horse, the QH filly, was sold to a wonderful lady and went on to be trained by a top trainer in Western Pleasure, but ended up being an AQHA Champion for her new owner in Showmanship due to her outstanding ground training foundation. Thank You Clinton! I would recommed this to anyone. Also, invest the fundamentals series, if you can. There is more detail on the different exercises there. It really does work! |
Comprehensive!

| The great thing about this DVD set is the amount of time devoted to each step. You get a good look at Clintons round penning technique, desensitizing, haltering, lunging for respect, handling feet, flexing, ponying, and on it goes. I have seen very few horses that dont have some holes in their training that could be fixed with these lessons. Kind of an encyclopedia of Clintons methods. |
